The base-plate consists of a 30mm thick steel plate. By turning the spindle (a long screw), the lamp can be set at an angle and the light can be directed. The diameter of the tube is actually too small for the heat generated by the lamp. This problem is resolved by the fact that the pipe is open at the bottom end. The tube acts as a chimney, so that the lamp is cooled by natural air circulation.
